The concept
The material forgives nothing. The thread snaps. Beads go missing. A form that has barely appeared can come apart from a single wrong move — and the whole practice takes its meaning from that fragility.
What is assembled here is never finally assembled. The form holds because someone keeps holding it.
Threading is a gesture that comes from what was called women's work: domestic patience, repeated labour that went unsigned and for centuries was not considered art. Applying it to anatomy — a heart, a womb, a stomach — gives that gesture back the weight it was denied.
Each piece is tens of thousands of minimal decisions. Every bead is stitched separately: the thread breaks, beads get lost, and the form comes apart at a single wrong move. That threat is not a flaw in the technique; it is what the work is saying.
The exhibition unfolds in four chapters, one a week, each taking a phase of the same movement: to hold, to look, to leave a trace, to let go.
The common thread
A nylon line runs across the room. At every opening anyone who wants to threads one bead onto it. Over four evenings the thread grows; on 1 October it comes down and becomes a work made by the people who passed through.
The artist
Ksenia Malurika (b. 1993) is an artist. She works with painting, performative and site-specific installation, video and scenography, and for the past three years with glass bead embroidery.
Her practice circles the experience of being inside space, time and the body, and presence understood as a fragile structure: always partial, always shifting.
In 2025 she did a residency at a2galerie (Potsdam).
